LaVon D. Schuster, 79, of Laurel, NE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Pender Community Health in Pender, NE. A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Laurel. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Laurel with Pastor Tom Tuura officiating. The rendering of Military Honors will be at the church. Lunch will follow at the Laurel Community Center. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield.
LaVon was born on May 7, 1947, in Tilden, NE, to Herbert and Frances “Frankie” (Storm) Schuster. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith while growing up in Orchard, NE. He graduated from Orchard High School in 1965. LaVon moved to Laurel and started attending Wayne State College. He was drafted into the US Army before he could complete his college degree. LaVon served from March 1970 to November 1971. During this time, LaVon had a short leave and he returned home and married Maureen Spath on August 22, 1970, at United Lutheran Church in Laurel. Shortly after his wedding, he was deployed and served in Vietnam from September 1970 to September 1971. Upon his return from Vietnam, LaVon was honorably discharged and returned to Laurel. He enrolled back into Wayne State College and graduated in 1972.
LaVon started working for the State of Nebraska Railway Commission. Shortly after he started working for Great Plains Supply in Laurel and later became the manager until they closed their Laurel office in 1985. Upon closure, he was asked to manage their regional store, Surplus Outlet, in Sioux City, IA. In 1992, LaVon joined the Corner Mart where he continued to work until 2012, when his health declined and he decided to retire. In 2015, after 3 years on dialysis due to cancer, LaVon received a kidney from his son Shane that extended his life 11 years. Those were precious years filled with family, cherished memories, and the joy of watching his grandchildren grow.
LaVon enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and attending sporting events. He rarely missed his son’s or grandchildren’s sporting events. LaVon was a proud and devoted grandfather and was simply and lovingly known as “Pops”.
LaVon is survived by his wife, Maureen Schuster of 56 years; son, Shane (Bev) Schuster of Pender, NE; grandchildren, Paige Schuster and Jake Schuster.
LaVon is preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Randall; stepfather, Garth Dawson.
