Larry W. Sunderman, 85, of Pender, NE, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church west of Pender. Burial with Military Honors will be in the St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender.
Larry was born on March 17, 1940, in Pender, the son of Werner and Elsie (Hammer) Sunderman. He was baptized on May 5, 1940, and confirmed on April 11, 1954, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member, an usher and served on the council. Larry attended District 9 and District 40 country schools before attending Pender High School. Following high school, Larry worked on the farm with his father. He entered the United States Army in 1962, serving until 1964 and was stationed in Germany for part of that service. On April 25, 1965, Larry married Susanne Nelsen at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wayne. To this union, three children were born: Brenda, Steve, and Barbara. The couple farmed northwest of Pender on the farm his great grandparents established. In 2012, their farm was awarded the Aksarben award for being in the family for 100 years. He then worked at Logan Valley Sales and Cubby’s in Pender. Larry served on the board of directors of Northeast Pork Producers and was a member of Thurston American Legion and Pender American Legion Post 55. Larry liked playing the accordion, enjoyed fishing, and having coffee with the guys, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Larry like visiting with everyone, and “never met a stranger.”
Larry is survived by his wife, Susanne Sunderman of Pender; son, Steve (Lynette) Sunderman of Pender; daughters, Brenda (Darrin) Barner of Laurel, NE, Barb (Mike) Murphy of Elkhorn, NE; five grandchildren, Shane Sunderman (Lucy Larsen), Tanner (Jynessa) Sunderman, Justin Murphy (Nick), Nathan Murphy, Alyssa Murphy; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn Hoppner of Hampton, NE, LeAnn Jones of Moore, OK, Marjean (Leroy) Mostek of Beemer, NE; brother, Alvin Sunderman of Thurston, NE; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Sunderman; sister-in-law, Rae Sunderman; and brothers-in-law, Russell Hoppner and Stanley Nelsen.
