Fred W. Bassett

Fred W. Bassett, 72, of Bancroft, NE, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at his home in Bancroft. The visitation will be on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft. The funeral will be on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bancroft, with Reverend Robert Schilling officiating. The burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery in Bancroft. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church (PO Box 306, Bancroft, NE 68004). Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft.

Fred was born on October 23, 1953, in Oakland, NE, to Charles and Wilma (Sorensen) Bassett. He was baptized and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Bancroft. Fred graduated from Bancroft High School in 1971. After graduating, he moved to Omaha and worked on a construction crew for 2 years. On February 16, 1974, Fred married JoLynn Miller at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft. To this union, the couple had two sons.

Fred started farming upon his return to Bancroft in 1974. He worked at Holmquist Lumber part-time while farming and continued even after retirement. Fred also worked part-time for Stanek Brothers during harvest season.  Fred also helped his brother-in-law with construction after retirement.

In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing and traveling with Jo. They traveled throughout the United States and to Europe a couple of times. Fred loved attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching them perform. He was active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and served as an Elder and was a member of the Men’s Club. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends in the card club.

Fred is survived by his wife, JoLynn Bassett of Bancroft, NE; sons, David (Shayla) Bassett of Hickman, NE, Christopher (Stefanie) Bassett of Norfolk, NE; four grandchildren, Kimberly Bassett, Ryan Bassett, Austin Bassett, Alyse Bassett; sisters, Colean (Richard) Hawk of Sioux Falls, SD, Deb (Rockne) Daberkow of Carthage, NC; brother, Tom (Gaby) Bassett of Spearfish, SD.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents; and parents-in-law.
