John August Sunderman

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson; Father Gerald Leise will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the church in Emerson. There will be a prayer service on Friday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Emerson. Johnnie was born on a farm near Pender on August 6th, 1922 to John and Bertha (Ahlers) Sunderman. He attended school at District 2 ("Frog Pond") in Thurston County. He married Madeline Paulsen on January 12th, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson, Nebraska. where he was a faithful member until passing. They lived and farmed northwest of Pender until they moved to Emerson in 2001. After retirement, Johnnie enjoyed Polka dancing, bowling, golfing and was a champion horse shoe thrower. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Johnnie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Madeline; 5 daughters and 1 son, Rita (Mike) Murphy of Globe, Arizona; Linda (Larry) Kent of Broomfield, Colorado; Ed Sunderman of Okochobee, Florida; Alane (J.C.) Vollers of Camdenton, Missouri; Mary (Lynn) Tonjes of Pender, Nebraska; Carol Burdick of Emerson, Nebraska; a daughter-in-law Bonnie Sunderman of Orlando, Florida; as well as 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Delores (Dale) Doht of Pender. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Alvin and Werner Sunderman.
